Aging - Concerning Caretaking
The saying "Youth is wasted on the young" is true as you begin to age and realize that things are not as simple as they once were - getting out of bed can be extremely difficult on certain days. This is around the time that you look towards your family members for help only if it is an option that ensures they can be your caretaker. Not all families have the time to take care of their loved ones since they are busy tending to their normal daily activities. If these circumstances describe your situation, then it is likely that you will be looking into caretakers or possible retirement communities.
There is an argument that is made concerning caretakers and retirement communities: they are impersonal and awkward for both participants - the ager and the employee. The concern for the person that is aging is that they are unable to continue with their normal daily activities such as stretching, cooking, cleaning, and driving without the help of another person. The quality of life for people that are aging begins to go down and it can be seen in their physical body - they begin to look more worn and tired. A caretaker or retirement community can ensure that each individual is able to continue stretching, cooking, cleaning, and driving with the help of their employees. This should not be frowned upon as impersonal or awkward - it should be viewed as necessary to continue living with a purpose, though the circumstances may be different.
Caretaking needs to be researched through interviewing with your loved ones so that you may pick the one that best meets your needs - personal or activities. If the money (which I will expound upon later in this article) is not a concern, then your best situation would be to stay where you have been without interrupting your normal activities since consistency is essential to health. Through research and interviewing you must ask questions about how the program or self-hired employee would benefit yourself and care for your needs without disrupting your typical day.
The cost of caretaking can be expensive for any family to afford especially if there are already financial difficulties. In such circumstances it is advisable to seek government funding that will take care of your loved one while offering benefits that allow them to live their daily life as best as possible. Seeking money can seem an impossible task at times, but if all else fails then the caretaking must be done by the family or risk losing your relationship and seeing the livelihood of your loved one deteriorate. There are plans, that if your parents or loved ones are still young, you should mention as possible methods for ensuring they are cared for in old age, if you cannot take care of them due to unforeseen circumstances. This may sound cold and heartless to most people, but the truth is that it may not be possible for you to take in your loved one when they begin to age. Caretaking concerns not only the person aging, but the family of the aging person.
